This year’s NBA rookie talent is at an all-time high chock full of new prospects and promising futures. While most people were focused on Lonzo Ball and the phenomena that was created around him, new faces like Markelle Fultz, Jayson Tatum, and Ben Simmons are all proving that they are worth the hype. The NBA offseason was insane this year due to the amount of offseason trades and new acquisitions which created only more anticipation for opening night. Knowingly, the teams with the worst seasons of the previous year have the highest chance of gaining new talent in hopes to revitalize their franchise. This season, may have the most potential of turning the dominant tide in both the Western and Eastern Conferences.
As the clock strikes 3, it’s usually time for practice when you’re in Athletic Director/Women’s Basketball Coach Misty Opat’s world. However, this was special. Opat and her team of coaches and assistants had just finished setting up for a 16-team preseason JUCO (Junior College) basketball jamboree, here at Rock Valley’s Physical Education Center aka The Nest. The line to get in this tourney is wait-listed and elusive to enter. All day long she is tending to the pressing tasks that mount each day.

The NBA recently made the decision to switch from Adidas to Nike to be their brand ambassador when playing in alternate jerseys. These jerseys can be flashy and representative of their respective cities and teams, and some of them plain looking and seemingly fitting (no pun intended) of their franchises, have mixed reviews. A team’s jersey is significant, it’s more than just a number and name recognition. Jerseys resemble and represent the state and city. The jersey itself is a statement to their fans and to other teams.
The NBA is famous for having fashionable and iconic jerseys with some teams having several alternate and throwback jerseys.
The Men and Women’s Golden Eagles soccer clubs are enjoying success heading into the heart of their respective schedules. Last year the Ladies went 14-2-2 and went all the way to the Region IV Championship game. Fast forward to this year and they’re 4-2-1 and on a 3 game winning streak, and perfect at home (1-0). They’re set to play the Joliet Junior College Wolves at home on Wednesday. The Lady Wolves are 7-1 and just suffered their first loss of the season.
Football season is back! Kicking off the month means franchises attempt to get the last trades and contract agreements nailed down before the first spike. The preseason provided fans a look at what they can expect to see in the 2018 NFL regular season. It’s time to see who can get their hands on another Lombardi Trophy. While the main headlines this preseason are the early Super Bowl picks, there is one headline that has the league surprised.
The Kyrie Irving – Isiah Thompson Trade
Pre-season basketball is known to be just as exciting as the regular season. Trade rumors, Gatorade Summer League basketball games, staff changes, and the like are all examples of what can be expected before the regular season begins. Teams hope of transforming and cultivating their rosters to be playoff, and championship finals ready. General managers and front offices of struggling and in some cases, not so struggling NBA franchises, devise trade deals, evaluate contracts, and buy outs to examine very carefully the economy of the league. Notable Eastern Conference giants such as Cleveland and Boston are two teams that engaged in an unprecedented trade deal sparking up new talks of player’s loyalty with their future and potential in their new homes.
Warriors Reign Game One
The Golden State Warriors remain undefeated in the postseason and took the reigns early on in the NBA Finals with a 1-0 lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers, with a final score of 113-91. Both teams are delivering the hype and Game 1 did not disappoint. Lebron and co. couldn’t stop the massive performance from Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry putting up 38 points and 28 points respectively. History favors the opposing team facing Lebron in the first game (James’ record is 1-7 in all game 1s in the finals he’s participated in), but this series is far from over.
The NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs are entering the second round. The first round, depending on who you cheered for, was extremely disappointing or gave you a mental chip on the shoulder. There were no game 7 playoff matches in the first round, but multiple games went into overtime for a sudden death victory. The most surprising news from the first round of playoff matches were the Chicago Blackhawks’ exit. They had the best record in the Western Conference going 50-23-9.
The outdoor track campaign is upon us with the spring weather and cool crisp air. These signs show track athletes across the nation are strapping on their spikes and waiting in anticipation for the weekend. Athletes will run their fastest, throw their furthest, and jump their highest. Young athletes usually have some sort of role model to look up and follow their example in hopes of becoming as great as they were. Each sport has their Michael Jordan.
