March 20, 2018, Illinois voters were able to decide on multiple candidates and different referendums. From the Rockford “Home Rule,” to Boone County’s Fire Chief proposal there was a lot to choose from. Here are some of the notable results:

  • Incumbent Republican Governor Rauner defeated Ives by 2%. That was closer than most analysts were calling.
  • Pritzker defeated Biss and Kennedy highhandedly for the Democratic nominee for Illinois Governor.
  • Rockford voted “No” to the Home Rule proposal.
  • Sheriff Gary Caruana defeated Kurt Ditzler for Winnebago County Sheriff.
  • Incumbent Representative Kinzinger is the Republican nomination over Marter.
  • Boone County voted to elect their Fire Chief instead of appointing them.

The General Election (Midterms) is upcoming in November and it will be an interesting road for Illinois voters. It appears to already be the “Battle of the Billionaires,” for it may very well be the most expensive non-presidential election ever. It is estimated J.B. Pritzker has spent 70 million on his campaign while Governor Rauner has spent 50 million on his campaign.

Primary Election turnout isn’t as large as General Elections, but they still weigh a lot specifically for local candidates and referendums.

Unfortunately, it’s clear to see the numbers in, that voter apathy is in full effect. That the decision of a few voters, rule the majority.

An easy painless way to research and prepare your decisions is using a website like ballotready.org. It prepares your specific ballot and gives you the list of candidates and their stances, as well as their endorsements.

It’s easy to use and clear to understand. Another helpful tip is that the site tells you where your polling place will be if you’re anything like me and forget.

2018 is a pivotal year for our nation and region. Do the due diligence, see through the ads, and show up to the polling booth in November.

Your vote counts.
